Norma Duran Brown
Norma Duran Brown, a former Argentinian attorney who arrived 17 years ago to the USA, has found in the field of education her true service to justice. Ms. Brown’s various certifications, combined with her legal background and life experience, give her an exceptional understanding of the Latino immigrant family’s reality. Her work in education, advocacy and nonprofits allows her to organically understand the education system’s goals, dynamics, accomplishments and challenges. She is currently Erwin district Family Outreach Specialist for Buncombe County Public Schools.
WNC has benefited from Ms. Brown’s pioneering efforts since 2002, the beginning of Manos Latinas, I. C. Mexican Dance Group and the Latino Institute of Human Development, a collaboration with Pigeon Community Development Center. These efforts have brought a long-lasting friendship between Haywood County African American and Latino marginalized communities. In Buncombe County, MANOS (Mentoring and Nurturing Our Students), in collaboration with Warren Wilson College, as well as De Mujer a Mujer NC, are having an undeniable impact in our community.
