Hillcrest High-Steppers

The Hillcrest High-Steppers is a majorettes and drum corps, founded in 1977, directed by John R. Hayes, Paula L. Hayes, and Mr. Michael Hayes. The group is an organization under The Youth Empowerment Program of The Empowerment Resource Center of Asheville/Buncombe, Inc. and The Hillcrest Enrichment Program.

The Hillcrest Enrichment Program (HEP) targets low income, high-risk students, and their families. The program seeks to educate, motivate, and stimulate the family; and stress family self-sufficiency. HEP features workshops, seminars, retreats, and peer tutors/mentors who serve as guides, role models, and support to the younger students.

The Hillcrest High-Steppers have received various awards for outstanding performances and routines. They have been awarded “Best Walking/Marching Group and the President Award” in the Greenville Poinsettia Christmas Parade many times, and they received the second place award in the 2009 Christmas Parade.
