Chef Hanan Shabazz
Chef Hanan Shabazz is a Chef, Educator and Spiritual Leader. She was born in 1949 in Asheville, North Carolina. Her father was a Pig Farmer. As a young girl she would go with her father and collect waste from the various soul food restaurants in the area for pig feed. It was this early exposure that, along with her mother and grandmother’s cooking, gave her a foundation in culinary. In the 1970s, Ms. Hanan moved to New York City and became a Muslim. She worked closely with the Mosque and furthered her cooking career by providing the food for the brothers and sisters. Upon returning to Asheville she took a job as a baker, and ended up owning what would become Shabbaz Soul Food, a popular eatery at the time. In 2012 Hanan enrolled in the second cycle of Kitchen Ready as a student. In cycle seven she was hired by Chef Liam to work as a chef instructor and help run the donation-based soul food café operated by Kitchen Ready students. Her teachings, food, recipes and antidotes are a key aspect of the kitchen’s success.
